Hadrian (r. 117–138 AD) is best known for his close relationship with Antinous and for being the most traveled of the Roman emperors. After Antinous drowned in the Nile in 130, Hadrian deified him, founded the city of Antinoöpolis, and spread his cult across the empire—an extraordinary display of imperial grief and power. Hadrian also spent years touring the provinces, inspecting legions, and overseeing massive building projects, including Hadrian’s Wall in Britain and the rebuilding of the Pantheon.
