Who were the Vikings?

The story behind the answer

The Vikings were seafaring Norse from present-day Norway, Denmark, and Sweden whose longships enabled swift coastal strikes and far-reaching commerce. Beginning with the 793 attack on Lindisfarne, their raids targeted wealthy monasteries and towns across the British Isles and Frankish coasts. Yet they were also active as merchants and settlers: navigating rivers to trade furs, amber, and captives in markets from the Baltic to the Abbasid Caliphate and Constantinople, where some served in the Varangian Guard. They founded towns such as Dublin and York and explored as far as Iceland, Greenland, and briefly North America. Over time many adopted Christianity and integrated into local kingdoms, shaping medieval Europe’s economies, languages, and laws.
