Sciophobia (also spelled sciaphobia) is the fear of shadows. The term comes from the Greek skia, meaning “shadow,” and phobos, “fear,” so shadows—not bright lights, eating, or transportation—are the trigger. People with sciophobia may feel anxious when shadows change shape or appear suddenly, especially in dim environments.
Why might this fear emerge? Shadows can obscure detail and suggest hidden threats, tapping into our brain’s survival wiring and tendency to “see” patterns (pareidolia). It’s more common in children but can affect adults, too.
