The story behind the answer

Basenjis are nicknamed the “barkless dog” because of their uniquely shaped larynx, which limits the typical bark. Instead, they vocalize with a yodel-like sound called a “baroo,” along with chortles and whines—so they’re not silent, just different.

Originating in Central Africa (often called the Congo), Basenjis were prized hunting companions, moving quietly through dense brush—making their minimal barking an advantage. They’re also known for cat-like grooming, a tightly curled tail, and a wrinkled forehead. Memory tip: Barkless Basenji—both start with B—and think “Basenji says baroo, not bark.”
