The story behind the answer

Totalitarianism is the novel’s core theme: the Party seeks absolute control over public and private life through constant surveillance (telescreens), Thought Police, propaganda, and the rewriting of history. Individual thought is criminalized (“thoughtcrime”), and dissent is broken by fear and torture (Room 101), showing how a total state erases personal freedom and truth.

George Orwell wrote this in 1949 as a warning after witnessing the rise of Nazi fascism and Soviet Stalinism. The regime’s tools—Newspeak (shrinking language to limit thought) and doublethink (holding contradictory beliefs)—illustrate how totalitarianism manipulates reality itself. Memory hook: “Big Brother is watching you,” and “2 + 2 = 5” remind us how such systems demand obedience over facts.
