These two maritime republics dominated Mediterranean commerce in the High and Late Middle Ages. Their vast fleets and chains of colonies and fondachi from the Levant to the Black Sea channeled spices, silks, and grains into Europe. Commercial privileges won from Byzantium, Crusader states, and later Mamluk Egypt, plus the logistics of the Crusades, cemented their role as Europe’s gateway to the East.

Their fierce rivalry drove advances in shipbuilding and navigation and fostered financial tools like the commenda, bills of exchange, and marine insurance. Earlier players such as Pisa and Amalfi were eclipsed, while inland centers like Florence and Milan thrived on finance and textiles rather than eastern sea routes.
