Who led prayers and church services in a local village?

Only an ordained clergyman could preside at Mass and administer the sacraments—baptism, marriage, confession, and last rites—so village worship was led by the parish rector or vicar. By contrast, the sexton cared for the church and graveyard, the bell-ringer summoned people to worship, and the choir leader directed chant but did not conduct the liturgy.

Parish churches anchored medieval village life. The liturgy was largely in Latin, and the clergyman was often among the few literate locals, teaching basics of faith, recording births and marriages, and conveying news from the wider Church. Supported by tithes and under a bishop’s authority, he mediated between peasants and manor lords and guided the community through festivals, fasts, and crises like famine or plague.
