He was the principal figurehead of the 1381 uprising, guiding rebel groups from Kent and Essex to London to demand an end to serfdom, reduction of taxes, and reform of corrupt local officials. After negotiating with the young Richard II at Smithfield, he was fatally attacked, and the revolt soon collapsed. The unrest grew from post–Black Death labor shortages, harsh enforcement of the Statute of Labourers, and an unpopular poll tax—pressures that made rural and urban workers unusually militant. Preacher John Ball’s fiery sermons also stoked the movement.
