World War II. The National World War II Memorial sits exactly between the Washington Monument and the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. Dedicated in 2004, it honors the 16 million Americans who served and the more than 400,000 who died during the war.

To remember it, think “Atlantic to Pacific, coast-to-coast”: the memorial features two grand arches labeled Atlantic and Pacific and 56 granite pillars for the states and territories united in the war effort. At its west side, the Freedom Wall displays 4,048 gold stars—each representing 100 American lives lost.
