The story behind the answer

February is Black History Month in the United States. It began in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” created by historian Carter G. Woodson to encourage the study of Black achievements. February was chosen to align with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12) and Frederick Douglass (traditionally celebrated Feb 14). The observance expanded to a month in 1976, when President Gerald Ford urged Americans to honor the “too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.”
