Magnesium burns with an intensely bright white flame because its rapid oxidation (2Mg + O2 → 2MgO) releases so much heat that the metal incandesces, emitting a broad, nearly white continuum plus strong ultraviolet. This dazzling light is so intense it can damage eyes—classic chemistry demos warn you not to look directly at burning magnesium.
By contrast, other metals show distinctive flame-test colors: lithium gives a crimson red, copper a green/blue-green, and lead doesn’t produce a brilliant white flame. Fireworks and old flash photography used magnesium (and aluminum) to create vivid white illumination. Memory tip: “Mg = Mega Glow” or “Magnesium makes Mag-nificent white light.”
