The Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in 1918 as World War I ended. Wartime strain and surging nationalism triggered rapid secessions—Czechs and Slovaks, South Slavs, and others declared independence in October–November 1918. Austria signed the Armistice of Villa Giusti (Nov 3), and Emperor Charles I soon relinquished power, leaving new states in its place.

Postwar treaties (Saint-Germain 1919, Trianon 1920) formalized the breakup into Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia), among others.
