Scarab is correct because ancient Egyptians linked the dung beetle’s habit of rolling a ball of dung to the sun’s daily journey. The god Khepri—often depicted as a scarab or a man with a scarab head—embodied the rising sun and the idea of continual becoming and renewal (the verb kheper means “to become”). Scarab amulets were worn for protection and placed with mummies; “heart scarabs” inscribed with Book of the Dead spells were meant to aid a favorable judgment in the afterlife.
