The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest pyramid in Egypt, built in the 27th century BCE at Saqqara for Pharaoh Djoser by his architect Imhotep. It began as stacked mastabas, creating six “steps,” and stands as the first large-scale stone monument in history—an innovation that paved the way for later, smooth-sided pyramids.

By contrast, Sneferu’s Bent and Red Pyramids (4th Dynasty) and Khufu’s Great Pyramid at Giza came later.
