Eurasian Magpie (Pica pica) shows stark black-and-white plumage with a long, iridescent blue‑green tail and white shoulder patches. That separates it from the Azure-winged Magpie’s powder‑blue wings and gray body, and from the Pied Crow’s bulky build and white chest-collar. It’s also the European–Asian counterpart of the nearly identical Black-billed Magpie, which is mainly North American—location is often the clincher.

Magpies are corvids, among the most intelligent birds; Eurasian Magpies have passed the mirror self-recognition test, cache food, and can mimic sounds. They build large domed stick nests and feature in folklore (“One for sorrow…”). Memory tip: think “formal black suit, white waistcoat, and a flashy iridescent tail”—the classic Eurasian Magpie look across Europe and much of Asia.
