The story behind the answer

Unlike a local market (regular, small-scale), a permanent bazaar, or a caravanserai (a roadside inn for caravans), this was a periodic, chartered gathering that attracted merchants from far afield for days or weeks. Rulers granted safe-conducts, tax privileges, and swift “piepowder” courts, while moneychangers handled multiple currencies and credit—turning the event into a regional and even international trade hub.

The great Champagne gatherings of the 12th–13th centuries linked the Mediterranean with the North Sea, moving cloth, spices, and furs and spreading financial tools like bills of exchange and standardized weights and measures. Beyond commerce, they featured performers, feasting, and news-sharing—part marketplace, part festival—briefly transforming quiet towns into major commercial capitals.
