What was the main job of most people in the Middle Ages?

Because medieval society was overwhelmingly rural and agrarian, the vast majority of people were peasants or serfs who worked the land. Their labor fed everyone else—lords, clergy, and the growing towns—and rents, tithes, and dues were often paid in grain or labor. Seasonal cycles dictated life: plowing, sowing, harvesting, and fallow periods structured the year.

This land-based economy underpinned the feudal system and manorial estates. Innovations like the heavy plow, the horse collar, and (later) the three-field rotation increased yields, enabling population growth before the Black Death. After the plague, labor shortages briefly improved bargaining power and wages for survivors, but the core reality remained: most people’s daily work was tied to soil, weather, and the rhythms of agriculture.
