What is a “fief” in return for “homage” and service?

In the feudal system, a vassal offered homage and swore fealty to a lord, who in turn granted a heritable estate to sustain the vassal’s obligations—especially equipping for war. This estate produced resources through rents, agriculture, and labor, making it far more than a title or a mere promise of protection; it was the concrete base that funded service.

Ceremonially, the grant was “invested” with a clod of earth, a charter, or a banner. While some fiefs could be rights or offices, most were territorial holdings such as manors. In return, vassals owed military service, counsel in the lord’s court, hospitality, and payments like relief. This reciprocal arrangement underpinned medieval power and shaped Europe’s social and political landscape.
