In 1948, Israel was founded. Which conflict began immediately afterward?

Answer

The first Arab–Israeli war

The story behind the answer

The first Arab–Israeli war began immediately after Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948. Within hours, neighboring Arab states—Egypt, Transjordan (Jordan), Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon—invaded, triggering a full-scale conflict that lasted into 1949 and ended with armistice lines known as the Green Line. The war shaped Israel’s borders and led to the displacement of around 700,000 Palestinians, remembered as the Nakba (“catastrophe”).
