The story behind the answer

The flag belongs to Nauru: the thin gold stripe represents the Equator, and the white 12-pointed star set just below marks Nauru’s location one degree south and the island’s 12 original tribes. That equator-plus-star layout is distinctive to Nauru.

Nauru is one of the world’s smallest nations, independent since 1968. Once very wealthy from phosphate deposits left by seabirds, it later faced environmental and economic strain. Memory tip: Nauru = near the Equator—the star sits just under the equatorial line.
