Fresh water should always be available because dogs constantly lose moisture through panting and respiration. Water supports temperature regulation, circulation, and digestion, and prevents dehydration, which can cause lethargy, dry gums, and kidney strain. A common guideline is about 1 ounce (30 ml) of water per pound of body weight per day—more in hot weather, with exercise, or for nursing mothers.

Unlike food, which is best offered in measured meals to prevent obesity, water should be free-choice. Keep bowls clean and refill with fresh water daily
