This page arranges an authoritative text (the lemma) in the center, with explanatory notes wrapped around it—those surrounding notes are glosses. Unlike casual marginalia or between-the-lines interlinear notes, a glossed page is a deliberate scholastic design that lets readers follow the core text while consulting commentary at a glance; it’s not a palimpsest (reused parchment).

Glossing flourished in the medieval schools and universities. The Bible’s Glossa Ordinaria and the glosses on Roman law at Bologna (by figures like Accursius) shaped how students learned to analyze texts, compare authorities, and argue. This layout pioneered a “hyperlinked” reading experience centuries before digital media, complete with lemmata cues, sigla, and rubrication to guide the eye through layers of meaning.
