Haiti declared independence on January 1, 1804, after the Haitian Revolution expelled French rule from Saint-Domingue. Led by Jean‑Jacques Dessalines, building on Toussaint Louverture’s earlier leadership, Haiti became the first independent Black republic and the second independent state in the Western Hemisphere.

Napoleon’s bid to restore slavery and control the colony collapsed as Haitian fighters and yellow fever destroyed his expedition. That defeat helped push him to sell Louisiana in 1803; the next year, as he crowned himself emperor, he had already lost France’s richest Caribbean colony.
