Harry Potter · Question
Who founded Slytherin house?
Answer
Salazar Slytherin
The story behind the answer
Salazar Slytherin founded Slytherin House, one of the four original Hogwarts houses established by the school’s founders: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Slytherin himself. He prized ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and leadership—traits the Sorting Hat still uses when placing students into Slytherin.
Historically, Slytherin clashed with the other founders over admitting Muggle-born students, a dispute that led to his departure and the secret creation of the Chamber of Secrets, which housed a Basilisk meant to purge those he deemed unworthy. He was also a Parselmouth (able to speak to snakes), a symbol tied closely to Slytherin’s serpent emblem. Memory tip: Slytherin, Serpent, and Salazar all start with “S.”
