The story behind the answer

The figure’s heavy mail or plate armor, helm with visor, lance or sword, and heraldic shield mark a mounted elite warrior of medieval Europe, bound by feudal oaths to a lord. Spurs and a surcoat bearing a coat of arms are classic cues. Unlike a squire (a trainee) or a mercenary (a soldier-for-hire), this role was tied to landholding and service; and unlike a paladin (a legendary or specifically holy champion), it was a real social and military class.

Training followed the page-to-squire-to-dubbing ceremony path, and ideals of chivalry promoted courage, loyalty, and courtly conduct. They dominated battlefields as shock cavalry, celebrated in tournaments and jousts, until longbows, pikes, and gunpowder reduced their supremacy. Their legacy endures in heraldry, literature, and ceremonial orders.
