The story behind the answer

The image shows members of a monastic community: men in simple habits with tonsured heads, gathered in a cloister or scriptorium. Their daily life followed the Rule of Saint Benedict—“ora et labora” (pray and work)—with set hours for prayer, study, and manual labor, including copying manuscripts and illuminating texts.

Beyond devotion, these communities were medieval engines of learning and service. They preserved classical and religious writings, cultivated new farming techniques, brewed beer, offered hospitality to travelers, and ran infirmaries. Unlike friars, who preached among the public and relied on begging, they lived a largely enclosed life within a monastery. And while some acted as scribes, their identity and purpose were broader: a disciplined religious vocation that shaped education, art, music (like Gregorian chant), and knowledge across the Middle Ages.
