Note the long, narrow hull with overlapping planks (clinker-built), shallow draft for beaching, a single square sail, and many evenly spaced oar ports—often with shields along the rail and an animal-headed prow. A knarr is broader and cargo-focused with few oars; a cog is boxy, high-sided with a sterncastle and no oar banks; a Mediterranean galley has multiple banks of oars and a triangular lateen sail.

This sleek Norse warship combined sail and oar power for speed and surprise, enabling lightning coastal raids and open‑ocean voyages. Its flexible hull handled rough seas, taking crews to Iceland, Greenland, and even Vinland around 1000 CE, and it featured prominently in elite burials and saga lore.
