Why were mastiff-type dogs valued in ancient times?

Mastiff-type dogs were prized for guarding and warfare because their massive build, intimidating presence, and steady, fearless temperament made them natural deterrents and battlefield assets. Ancient Assyrian and Persian art shows large dogs alongside soldiers; Romans used canes pugnaces—sometimes with spiked collars or light armor—to protect camps and disrupt enemy formations.

These are “molosser” dogs, linked to the Molossian hounds of Epirus, and ancestors of many modern mastiffs (English, Neapolitan, Tibetan). Memory tip: mastiff = massive + stiff defense. They weren’t bred to herd or haul; they were built to hold the line, guard gates, and project power.
