The hanging wooden plaque with a bold emblem and stylized tools is typical of a medieval craft association marking its workshop. In towns where many people couldn’t read, pictorial shop signs signaled a trade at a glance—an anvil for smiths, shears for tailors, a tankard for brewers—and showed membership in a recognized association that upheld quality and standards.

These associations shaped urban life: they regulated training through the apprentice–journeyman–master system, inspected goods, set prices, and offered mutual aid to members. They sponsored feast days, paraded with banners, and sometimes dominated city politics. Their marks on signs and seals became trusted brands in bustling medieval marketplaces.
