The story behind the answer

Medieval university teaching revolved around formal disputations designed to harmonize revealed theology with classical philosophy. Professors posed a quaestio, marshaled authorities pro and con (Scripture, the Church Fathers, Aristotle), invited objections, then offered a respondeo that reconciled tensions through precise definitions and syllogistic reasoning. The aim was to show that reason, rightly used, could clarify faith.

It flourished in Paris, Oxford, and Bologna, with figures like Anselm, Peter Abelard, and especially Thomas Aquinas shaping its methods. Its textbooks (Summae) and the disputatio format still echo in modern academic argument. By contrast, dialectic was the logical toolset it employed, nominalism a later current within it, and humanism a Renaissance shift toward classical literature and rhetoric over theological synthesis.
