Herons hunt by standing or stalking in shallow water, then spearing fish. That body plan distinguishes them from a hawk (hooked beak, broad wings), a hummingbird (tiny, hovering nectar-feeder), and a house sparrow (small, chunky seed-eater).

Herons are worldwide wetland birds, famous for patient hunting and for folding their neck into an S-shape during flight.
