The story behind the answer

House Sparrows are small, chunky songbirds with a stout, conical bill made for cracking seeds. Males often show a gray cap, chestnut nape, and a black “bib,” while females are brown and streaky with a pale eyebrow. Unlike a hummingbird’s needle-like bill and hovering flight, a heron’s long legs and neck, or a hawk’s hooked beak and predatory build, a House Sparrow’s compact shape and seed-crushing bill are unmistakably sparrow.

This species thrives around people—think “House” Sparrow—nesting in eaves, storefront signs, and cavities. Native to Eurasia but introduced widely, it’s now one of the world’s most familiar birds. Remember the male’s little “necktie” bib and constant cheeping near human buildings to lock in the ID.
