What nutrient is essential for healthy skin and coat?

Answer

Omega-3 fatty acids

The story behind the answer

Omega-3 fatty acids (especially EPA and DHA from fish oil) are key for a dog’s healthy skin and glossy coat because they reduce inflammation and strengthen the skin’s lipid barrier. By balancing inflammatory molecules in the skin, omega-3s help ease itching, dandruff, and allergy-related irritation, while improving moisture retention and shine.

Vitamin E, biotin, and zinc are important too—Vitamin E is an antioxidant, biotin supports keratin (hair), and zinc aids skin repair—but none target skin inflammation and barrier lipids as directly as omega-3s. Tip to remember: “O-3 makes it gleam”—the oily omega-3s give coats their sheen. Sources include fish oil (salmon, sardine), algal oil, and to a lesser extent flaxseed (ALA, which converts poorly in dogs).
