The story behind the answer

The vestments and actions point to the parish cleric who leads Mass and administers the sacraments—Eucharist, baptism, confession, marriage, and last rites. A deacon assists and preaches but does not consecrate the Eucharist; a monk lives under a monastic rule outside parish duties; and a churchwarden is a lay official handling upkeep and finances, not sacramental ministry.

In the Middle Ages, this figure was the community’s spiritual anchor and often its most educated resident. Ordained by a bishop and trained in Latin, he kept parish records, taught basic doctrine, collected tithes, and provided pastoral care. During upheavals like the Black Death, he was called to give last rites and bury the dead, underscoring how vital clergy were to daily life and medieval conceptions of salvation.
