The drawn bow and quiver of arrows mark this as a ranged infantryman; there’s no crossbow stock or winding gear, no long pike shaft, and no emphasis on a heavy sword for close combat.

In the Middle Ages, these troops could decide battles by thinning enemy ranks and breaking cavalry charges before contact. English longbowmen, trained from youth by law, famously dominated at Crécy and Agincourt with 6-foot yew bows pulling 100+ pounds. They used specialized arrowheads—bodkins to pierce mail and plate gaps, broadheads for unarmored targets—and fought behind wooden stakes, choosing terrain that magnified their rapid volleys. Their effectiveness reshaped tactics and challenged the supremacy of heavily armored knights.
