Power and protection flowed downward, while loyalty, service, and dues flowed upward, illustrating a web of mutual obligations rather than a single centralized state.

This order emerged in Western Europe after the collapse of Carolingian authority (9th–12th centuries), when local castles and oaths of fealty held society together. It’s distinct from related concepts: manorialism is the estate-based economic system, vassalage the personal lord‑vassal bond, and serfdom the legal status of bound peasants. As money economies, professional armies, and stronger monarchies grew (and demographic shocks like the Black Death reshaped labor), this structure gradually waned.
