Medieval “expeditions” most famously refers to the Crusades (11th–13th centuries), mass armed pilgrimages launched after Pope Urban II’s 1095 call to secure the Holy Sepulchre and other sacred sites. The city’s spiritual centrality to Christians, as the place of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection, made it a paramount goal, prompting nobles, knights, and peasants to march thousands of miles to reclaim or protect it.

Control shifted repeatedly: captured by crusaders in 1099, administered as the Latin Kingdom, then retaken by Saladin in 1187. Military orders like the Templars and Hospitallers arose to defend pilgrims. These journeys reshaped Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, spurring trade, mapmaking, and cultural exchange—alongside devastating warfare and religious intolerance.
