Ridge — Dogs

The story behind the answer

Ridge is correct because it describes a long, narrow raised area—essentially a linear elevation on a surface. In contrast, a sulcus or fissure is a groove or deep cleft (depressions), and a tubercle is a small, rounded bump. So if you see a prominent “line that rises,” that’s a ridge.

In dogs, ridges appear in both bone and coat. On the skull, the sagittal crest is a bony ridge where strong jaw muscles attach. In breeds like the Rhodesian Ridgeback and Thai Ridgeback, the distinctive dorsal “ridge” is formed by hair growing in the opposite direction along the spine. Memory tip: ridge rises, sulcus sinks, fissure is a split, tubercle is a tiny tub (bump).
