Augustus was the first Roman emperor. Born Gaius Octavius (Octavian), he was Julius Caesar’s adopted heir and, after defeating Antony and Cleopatra at Actium, the Senate granted him the title “Augustus” in 27 BC. He crafted the principate—rule by an emperor disguised with republican institutions—marking the true start of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar was a dictator, not an emperor; Tiberius was Augustus’s successor; Nero reigned much later.
