Chihuahua is correct because it’s the smallest recognized dog breed, typically weighing under 6 pounds (about 2.7 kg) and standing around 5–8 inches tall. While Pomeranians, Maltese, and Papillons are toy breeds, they generally weigh more and stand taller than Chihuahuas.

Originating in Mexico and named after the state of Chihuahua, the breed likely descends from the ancient Techichi kept by the Toltecs and later the Aztecs. Despite their tiny size, Chihuahuas are known for a bold, “big dog in a small body” personality and alertness. Memory tip: “Chi-hua-hua” sounds like “wee-hua”—think “wee” for the tiniest dog. Their signature “apple head” (a rounded skull) can also help you recall the small, compact nature of the breed.
