In which cardinal direction does the Sun rise from?
Answer
East
Explanation
East. The Sun appears to rise in the east because Earth rotates from west to east. This spin makes the sky seem to move the other way—east to west—so celestial bodies first appear on the eastern horizon. It’s exactly due east only on the equinoxes; in summer it rises slightly northeast (in the Northern Hemisphere) and in winter slightly southeast, but always generally in the east.
Memory tip: “East for arise, West for rest.” Fun fact: “Orient” comes from the Latin for “east” (oriens), which is why to “orient” a map means to align it—traditionally with the sunrise direction.
