Middle Ages · Question
True or False: The Knights Templar became wealthy through banking and donations.
Answer
True
The story behind the answer
Founded during the Crusades, the order received vast gifts of land, revenues, and privileges from kings and nobles eager to support the Holy Land and earn spiritual merit. Papal exemptions freed them from many taxes and local laws, letting them consolidate estates across Europe. These endowments funded their military work and created a far‑flung economic network.
To move money safely across dangerous routes, they pioneered financial services: deposits, safekeeping, and letters of credit that allowed pilgrims and princes to cash funds abroad. Their reliability made them bankers to monarchs, enabling large loans and international transfers. This combination of donations and finance made them extraordinarily wealthy and influential—so much so that King Philip IV of France, heavily indebted to them, engineered their arrest in 1307 and their eventual suppression in 1312.
