What was the goal of the Third Crusade (1189–1192)?

After Saladin’s 1187 victory at Hattin and the fall of Jerusalem, Europe rallied a new expedition led by Frederick Barbarossa, Philip II of France, and Richard I of England to reverse his gains. Campaigns along the Levantine coast recaptured Acre and saw Richard defeat Saladin at Arsuf, inching toward the holy city. Yet supply strains, inter-Crusader rivalries, and the strategic difficulty of holding the interior stalled the push. In 1192, Richard negotiated the Treaty of Jaffa: the coast from Jaffa to Tyre remained in Crusader hands and Christian pilgrims gained access to Jerusalem, but the city stayed under Ayyubid control. The infamous sack of Constantinople came later, in the Fourth Crusade (1204).
