When a dog yawns outside of sleepy times—during handling, training pressure, or in an unfamiliar or busy place—it’s a classic calming (appeasement) signal. Dogs use these signals to self-soothe and to diffuse social tension, essentially saying, “I’m uneasy; let’s keep things cool.” Stress yawns often appear with other signs like a tense mouth, “whale eye” (visible eye white), pinned ears, lip-licking, or a lowered posture.

Trainers and researchers (e.g., Turid Rugaas) group yawning with other calming signals such as sniffing, turning the head, and slow blinking. Memory tip: sleepy yawn = loose body and quiet setting; stress yawn = stiff body and charged situation. Spotting the difference lets you give space, reduce pressure, and keep interactions positive.
