The story behind the answer

Thick curtain walls with crenellations, multiple towers, a central keep, and narrow arrow slits signal a fortified residence designed for both defense and living quarters. That mix distinguishes it from a pure fortress (strictly military), a citadel (the fortified core of a larger city), or a palace (lavish but not primarily defensive).

In the Middle Ages, such strongholds served as noble homes, administrative hubs, and symbols of feudal power. Evolving from wooden motte-and-bailey designs to stone keeps and later concentric layouts, they anchored control over surrounding lands, guarded roads and rivers, and withstood sieges using features like gatehouses, murder holes, and drawbridges.
