What is “the clergy”?

“Clergy” refers to ordained ministers charged with performing sacraments, preaching, and governing the Church—deacons, priests, bishops, and higher prelates—distinct from lay worshippers, church buildings, or scholars who lack pastoral authority.

In the Middle Ages, they formed the First Estate, owned vast lands, collected tithes, and operated courts and schools. As the most literate group, they preserved texts and served as royal advisors and administrators. Conflicts over who could appoint bishops (the Investiture Controversy) reveal their political weight. Monastic and mendicant orders shaped spiritual life and charity, while the Black Death decimated ranks, prompting rapid ordinations and concerns about clerical standards.
