Jerk is the time derivative of acceleration: if position is s(t), then velocity v = s′(t), acceleration a = v′ = s″(t), and jerk j = a′ = s‴(t). Its units are meters per second cubed (m/s³). Intuitively, jerk measures how quickly acceleration itself is changing—what you feel as a sudden “jolt” when a car starts or stops abruptly.
Engineers care about limiting jerk to make rides smoother and reduce mechanical stress in elevators, roller coasters, and robotics.
