Granada, the last Nasrid emirate in Iberia, capitulated to the Catholic Monarchs on January 2 when Emir Muhammad XII (Boabdil) surrendered after a months-long siege. This ended nearly eight centuries of intermittent Christian campaigns, making that year the formal close of the Reconquista.
