What is “the Truce of God” movement mainly about?

A church-led reform in the 11th century, it forbade fighting on Sundays, holy feast days, and often from Wednesday evening to Monday morning, creating recurring “islands of peace” in a society rife with feuding nobles. Bishops enforced the bans with threats of excommunication, trying to curb bloodshed without abolishing warfare outright.

It developed alongside the Peace of God, which protected noncombatants and sacred property, but this initiative specifically restricted when knights could fight. Originating in southern France and spread by church councils and monastic networks like Cluny, it never fully ended violence, yet it standardized limits on warfare and helped shape medieval ideas about just war and the authority of the Church over lay militarism.
