Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) was a Benedictine abbess celebrated for recording vivid visionary experiences in major theological works like Scivias, as well as for extensive correspondence offering spiritual counsel to popes, emperors, and clergy. Her writings interpret her revelations within orthodox theology, giving her unusual authority for a medieval woman and shaping devotional and intellectual life in the 12th century.

Beyond her visions, she composed over 70 sacred songs and the musical drama Ordo Virtutum, blending theology with innovative melody. She also wrote treatises on natural history and healing (Physica; Causae et Curae), reflecting a holistic view of creation she called viriditas, the “greening” life force. In 2012 she was named a Doctor of the Church, recognizing her enduring influence.
